Bachelorette Finale Shocker: Jenn Proposes, Love Story Unravels After Hawaii

Throughout the entire season, the teasers for the climax of “The Bachelorette” showcased host Jesse Palmer hinting to the season’s protagonist, Jenn Tran, with the cryptic words: “No bachelorette finale has ever done this before.” On Tuesday night, the audience finally witnessed the culmination of Jenn’s journey and her ultimate choice.

In the preceding episode, dubbed “Fantasy Suites,” Jenn painstakingly whittled down her contenders from three to two, bidding farewell to Jonathon Johnson. Their parting was a poignant moment, with both acknowledging the deep connection they shared, yet recognizing that Jonathon hadn’t reached the same emotional depths as Devin Stader and Marcus Shoberg.

As the finale loomed, the air was thick with uncertainty—there was no clear favorite. Jenn’s admission of love for Marcus flowed naturally, but his hesitation to reciprocate left a void. In contrast, Devin had professed his love earlier, right after their hometown date, only to be met with silence until Jenn, laden with anxiety, finally echoed those sentiments in the days following their intimate night together.

However, as the three-hour finale unfolded, Jenn’s path became increasingly apparent after she introduced both men to her family.

During his encounter with Jenn’s kin, Marcus confessed to her mother Trinh and aunt Lylan that he hadn’t yet fallen in love with Jenn.

“I believe I can reach that place. I know I’m not there at this moment,” Marcus confessed. “For weeks, I’ve been tormented, questioning why I can’t feel what I’m yearning to feel. This absence of certainty fills me with doubt, yet I desperately want to find that clarity for her.”

Before their final date in the serene landscapes of Hawaii, a bewildered and disheartened Jenn sought Marcus out in his hotel room, seeking clarity on where their relationship stood.

“I’m not sure if you envision a future with me,” she voiced.

“My feelings for you are genuine, and I can envision a future with you,” Marcus responded. “But I can’t fathom why the thought of moving forward with someone I care so deeply about terrifies me so much.”

Despite Marcus eventually expressing his love and desire to fight for their relationship, Jenn made the heart-wrenching decision to send him home, forgoing their final date.

The morning after parting ways with Marcus, Jenn was still grappling with uncertainty over whether she would accept Devin’s proposal.

“I must listen to my heart today,” Jenn confided in Jesse during a one-on-one conversation. “I went into today with a clear idea of what I wanted, but this morning I awoke with an entirely different perspective.”

Jenn then disclosed her intentions: “I have to choose myself. I’m not going to allow Devin to propose to me today—I’m going to propose to Devin.”

She continued, “I want him to know that I will fight for him every day, and that I will choose him every day.”

However, the show refrained from airing the proposal itself. Instead, it cut back to Jesse in the live studio.

“You won’t be seeing that proposal,” he announced. “That’s right. Due to what has transpired since that day in Hawaii, we felt it wouldn’t be appropriate to air it until we heard from Jenn.”

Jenn then joined Jesse on stage, revealing to the audience what had transpired after she and Devin left Hawaii as an engaged couple.

“It’s been an incredibly tough few months,” Jenn began, tears welling up as she spoke. “We left Hawaii engaged and overjoyed. I believed I had found the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but almost immediately after leaving Hawaii, things began to change. It felt like he was distancing himself.”

“I felt like I was no longer his priority… and I couldn’t understand why,” she added. “We had planned a happy couple’s visit earlier this month, but the night before, he called me and ended the engagement. He told me that he didn’t love me anymore and didn’t feel the same way.”

She continued, “He confessed that something had felt off since the moment he proposed—that he regretted getting engaged. And I was completely blindsided. Deep down, I knew something was different, but I didn’t want to acknowledge it.”

Next in the “Bachelor” franchise lineup, Joan Vassos is set to headline the inaugural season of “The Golden bachelorette finale,” premiering on September 18. Next spring, ABC will unveil Season 29 of “The Bachelor,” with Jenn’s former contender Grant Ellis taking center stage. Also arriving in 2025 is Season 10 of “Bachelor in Paradise,” where Jonathon has already secured the first invitation, followed closely by Hakeem Moulton, another of Jenn’s former suitors.
